Born: Motier-en-Vuly, Canton Friborg, Switzerland.

Died: Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Occupation: Zoologist, Ichthyologist, Paleoconchologist. Worked under Cuvier in Paris, 1831-32; Prof. of Zoology, University of Neuchatel, Switzerland. Founder and forst Director of the Museum of Comparative Zoology – Harvard.

Education: University of Munich, M.D., 1827; University of Erlangen, Ph.D., 1829.
